Winifred Street is one of a little cluster of Victorian terraced houses tucked away in a little corner of Patricroft, just down the hill from the lovely Bridgewater Canal.
We are also surrounded by three main roads, the M60 and the railway, and have in the past featured in Salford’s top 5 fly tipping sites.
A group of us got together in 2022 and formed the RA to improve the quality of life for the community in and around Winifred Street in Eccles, through greening/gardening of the area; art and community activities, whilst also dealing with fly tipping issues which used to be a major problem.
• Dealing with rubbish that is fly-tipped and upcycling items, redistributing disused items for better purpose, upcycling items for the alleyway where we can.
• ‘Greening’ the alleyway, planting where we can and encouraging others to do the same, in the alleyway and their own backyards, creating a pleasanter environment but also Increasing the biodiversity.
• Creating safe spaces for the children to play . The nearest park is at least half a mile away and across a main road, we have some green space but its not enclosed and has no facilities, so that its not very useful for smaller children. Currently children play in the streets, open to traffic and potentially dangerous.
• Creating opportunities for adults and children in the area to come together, litter picking, gardening and craft projects, all beneficial for resident’s wellbeing, mentally and physically, and helpful in generating more harmony and community cohesion in the area.
• Running events in school holidays for children living on the estate such as street parties (Jubilee and Coronation parties (very well attended and appreciated by all) , craft sessions (painting plant pots), planting seeds, creating windmills, decorations for the alleyway.
